One upon a time Mike evoked Ed to defend himself. During the fight Mike
was killed and Ed, not knowing what to do, and not wanting to be put in jail by the
Authorities, ran away.
Yes, Ed had a good job, beautiful wife, and three children. He had just
brought a new car and had made a payment on a house; but he had broken the law and, alas,
now he was a law breaker.
He was always nervous, always expecting to be caught. Every time a
Policeman came near Ed, he became uncomfortable and agitated. This situation kept up for
four years. He had brought a gun which he kept by his bed and a knife which he kept under
his pillow. These became his constant companions and only friends. He depended on them for
protection. Still he was very uptight and very jittery.
One night while sleeping, a mouse ran across the floor upsetting some
pots and pans that had been carelessly stacked in a corner. Ed
woke with a start.
Grabbing his knife, and knocking over his gun which, incidentally discharged, he found
himself standing in the middle of his bed screaming at the top of his voice.
The next day Ed went to the Policewoman and gave himself up. Yes, the
Authorities locked Ed up that day, and that night Ed got the first sound sleep since the
day he decided to run away. He had made peace with the Authority and had placed himself at
their mercy.
The next day Ed was released a free man!!
because Mike had slipped, he was not dead.
